Speaking as someone who has seen a 917K in person, they're absolutely tiny, but so are every other prototype racecar.

I think prototypes look giant because they have a greenhouse. So we see greenhouse and assume it's relatively normal sized, and then extrapolate the rest of the car to fit. In reality the greenhouse is just barely big enough for the driver and his helmet.

Exactly. Proportionally they look big, it's just that all those proportions are smaller than what we're used to.
